What are proteoglycans?
These are natural macromolecules found in our skin, forming part of its cellular structure. Their function is to communicate between cells and the external environment, restore epidermal cells, and enhance the metabolism of connective tissue components. This makes them a source of hydration, firmness, and elasticity for the skin.
Their great hydration capacity is their most outstanding benefit since they are able to capture and retain up to 1,000 times their molecular weight in water, maintaining the skin’s natural hydration level.
What actions do proteoglycans perform?
- They activate collagen production: They improve skin elasticity and firmness by stimulating collagen synthesis. This helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in smoother skin.
- They regulate the water content of the tissue: They regulate the skin’s hydration level and its ability to retain water. In this way, an optimal moisture balance is achieved in the skin.
- They retain and trap water molecules: They have the ability to retain water, so they are able to provide deep and long-lasting hydration, leaving the skin nourished, soft and radiant.
- They accelerate the healing process: They promote the recovery of damaged skin by accelerating the healing process.
- Increased cellular metabolism: They stimulate the renewal of skin cells, resulting in healthier skin with a more rejuvenated appearance.
For all these reasons, proteoglycans are an increasingly used active ingredient in cosmetics, especially in those aimed at more mature skin and to mitigate the effects of aging on the skin.
Why include proteoglycans in your skincare routine?
Proteoglycans are often included in products such as ampoules and serums, making it easy to integrate them into your skincare routine, after cleansing your skin and before using moisturizer.
Furthermore, they can be used not only on the face, but also on the neck and décolleté, allowing the positive effects of their use to be noticed in these areas as well.
They are suitable for all skin types, although they are perfect for dry skin that suffers from sagging and wrinkles.
They can be used daily, both day and night. And their formulas often combine them with other hydrating and antioxidant actives such as vitamins C and E or hyaluronic acid
If we talk about the PRAXIS brand, we have our own line of proteoglycans aimed at offering a proteoglycan for each skin type. We found the Classics proteoglycans that make up the most hydrating formula.
We also have Vit C Plus proteoglycans which offer a higher percentage of vitamin C, making them antioxidants and brighteners. On the other hand, for those with combination and oily skin, or those who prefer lighter textures, there are Oil Free proteoglycans.
And since we couldn’t forget about them, we also have proteoglycans For Men , formulated for men.
